Art for the Heart (A4TH)

The name says it all. A wonderful community resource, Art for the Heart is much more than your typical art space.

Art For The Heart began in 1996 as part of the health initiatives of the non-profit MAS Comunidad (MAS), formerly Mountain Ambulance Service founded in 1982. After Taos County took over 911 services, MAS evolved, bringing other health initiatives to the community.  In 1986 The Laugh Staff (“humor for the health of it”) started as a stress relief tool for emergency medical staff and went on to hold clown clinics and pro-jests around issues of peace and justice.  In 1988, La Comunidad was formed as an environmental project, working with the Forest Service to shift from big logging contracts to local firewood sales. It then ran a recycling pilot project and in 1998 built a ReUse Center at our local transfer station for sharing reusable household goods, toys, books and clothing.  In 2015-2016 MAS put on Celebracion de Cultura: Estamos Aqui Familia y Tradiciones, a multi-cultural celebration of Peñasco and the surrounding communities designed to showcase the area’s rich history and traditions and to support community pride.

Art for the Heart’s mission is “to foster health through creativity.” From 1996 to 2017 it had a gallery in the heart of Peñasco, downstairs from Walking Woman Gallery, offering free creativity sessions for the public, a weekly HersDay women’s art and support group, monthly workshops, and summer youth programs. In 2001 A4TH created the Glam Trash Fashion show which has become a popular annual Town of Taos event. In 2008 A4TH started UpCycledFashion.com in response to the financial downturn, creating new fashions, quilts etc. out of clothing collected at the ReUse Center. A4TH is often called on to help with creative  endeavors such as school programs, murals, etc. and often donates art supplies to worthwhile projects.

In 2017 Art for the Heart moved to the MAS Comunidad property (The SPOT for Community Wellness) at 14156 State Road 75 and continues to offer creativity sessions, classes, and a weekly HersDay group. While the gallery space is more limited, it still offers many innovative crafts and arts created by the membership. A4TH also participates in the annual High Road Art Tour at the Peñasco Community Center. Art for the Heart is a cooperative with memberships.  For information, to schedule a visit, and/or to join, contact Gloria Maestas at rodartemaestas92@gmail.com or 575-770-8522.
