Composition,
Contrast, Color: How to Punch Up Your Paintings
I'll
demonstrate how all three C's can add boldness and vivacity
to paintings. I'll use the spectacular views from our
gallery to illustrate these principles with prepared
works and live sketching/painting. You are invited to
bring examples of your own work for critique, and painting
and sketching materials (and a picnic lunch) to try
your hand at the view from 2 to 5 pm following the demo.

Encaustic
I
will demonstrate the ancient art of encaustic (pigmented
wax) painting. The wax is pigmented with oil paint,
kept heated on an electric skillet, and painted onto
plywood panels. The layers are scraped smooth and fused
with a propane torch or heat gun. The resultant paintings
radiate color and light because the oil pigment is suspended
in the wax medium and refracts light, giving these works
of art wonderful depth. Visitors
will experience the only studio on the tour on an Indian
reservation. The tribe's buffalo herd and 30 spring
calves may wander into view from the studio's large
windows.
